    The Walmart Foundation provides funding to meet the needs of the under-served by funding the following core areas:  
    • Opportunity - supports initiatives that create opportunities for the general population, especially women, veterans and small business owners.
    • Sustainability  support initiatives that are essential to doing business responsibly and successfully; and 
    • Community inspiring associates to give their time and money; supporting associates, mitigating disaster, and serving local communities
    Walmart offers the following grant programs:
    • National Giving Grant Program - allows the Foundation to work strategically with organizations working across one or more states to address social issues strongly aligned with the Foundations focus areas.
    • State Giving Program - provides funds under the:
      • Focused Giving areas - Hunger Relief & Healthy Eating, Career Opportunity and Disaster Preparedness; and
      • Community Engagement Giving areas  for organizations seeking funding for programs outside of those listed in Focused Giving, and whose programs focus on the unmet needs of underserved low-income populations. Community Engagement examples include: education programs, healthcare access, shelters, and other human service programs.
    • Community Grant Program - supports local organizations with programs that align with Walmart and the Foundations areas of giving. However, programs that do not align with these areas may also be given consideration. These include programs that are geared toward strengthening the local communities, for example: local organizations providing health and dental screenings, support for local police and fire departments and local school-based initiatives.
    • Northwest Arkansas Giving Program - The Foundation has established the following strategic focus areas for Northwest Arkansas: Community Cohesion; Hunger Relief and Healthy Eating Services; Access to Health Care; and Quality of Life.
    • U.S. Manufacturing Innovation Fund - focuses on the development of domestic manufacturing with a specific goal of advancing the production or assembly of consumer products in the U.S.
    • Legal Department Strategic Partners Sponsorship Program - Walmart Legal seeks to increase diversity and inclusion in the legal profession through pipeline programs and attorney development programs that target populations underserved by the legal profession.
    • Sam's Club Community Giving - The Sam's Club Community Giving program makes the greatest difference by supporting causes that are important to Sam's Club members and associates. They offer local nonprofit organizations funds through the Community Grant Program. Sam's Club also offers support through employee volunteer services. Their commitment to giving also includes a desire to drive sustainability that positively impacts everyday individuals, and our planet.

    History of Funding

    Walmart and the Walmart Foundation awarded $1.4 billion in cash and in-kind contributions for 2015. Through the Sams Club Giving program, The foundation has donated 64 million meals, and helped recycle over 496,000 tons of material that include cardboard, plastic, aluminum and food waste.

  • Eligibility Details

    Eligibility varies based on program area: 
    • National Giving Grant Program - Eligible applicants are nonprofit organizations that operate on a national scale through chapters/affiliates in many states around the country or through programs that operate regionally/locally and are seeking funding to replicate successful program activities.
    • State Giving Program - Eligible applicants are nonprofit organizations that are requesting support for programs that serve unmet needs of low-income, underserved populations within the state or region for which they are applying. 
    • Community Grant Program - Eligible applicants are: nonprofit organizations; recognized government entities, (state, county, or city agencies), including law enforcement or fire departments, that are requesting funds exclusively for public purposes; K-12 public or private schools, charter schools, community/junior colleges, state/private colleges or universities; or churches or other faith-based organizations with a proposed project that benefits the community at large.
    • Northwest Arkansas Giving Program - Eligible applicants are nonprofit organizations that serve Benton and Washington counties of Arkansas.
    • U.S. Manufacturing Innovation Fund - Eligible applicants are 501(c)(3) organizations and public universities that are instrumentalities of a state government interested in receiving support for applied research.
    • Legal Department Strategic Partners Sponsorship Program - Eligible applicants are organizations that focus on programs and objectives that will result in meaningful impact toward diversifying the legal profession and supporting inclusion in the practice of law.
    • Sam's Club Community Giving - Eligible nonprofit organizations must operate on the local level (or be an affiliate/chapter of a larger organization that operates locally) and directly benefit the service area of the facility from which they are requesting funding.

    Deadline Details

    Deadlines vary based on program area: 
    • National Giving Grant Program - Letters of Inquiry are required for the National Giving Program and are accepted on an ongoing basis. Successful applicants will be invited to submit full proposals.
    • State Giving Program 
      • All states have two application cycles annually. Each state is assigned to either application cycles 1, 2, or 3. Please view the program guidance to determine which cycles your state may apply for.
      • The deadline to submit an application for Cycle 1 was February 10, 2017.
      • The deadline to submit an application for Cycle 2 was May 12, 2017.
      • The deadline to submit an application for Cycle 3 is August 11, 2017.
      • Similar deadlines are anticipated annually.
    • Community Grant Program - The 2017 grant cycle begins Feb. 1, 2017 and the application deadline to apply is Dec. 31, 2017.
    • Northwest Arkansas Giving Program - Deadlines vary by program. Please see the program guidance for detailed deadline information.
    • U.S. Manufacturing Innovation Fund - For deadline information, please contact the Walmart Foundation at the information provided in the contact section of this posting.
    • Legal Department Strategic Partners Sponsorship Program - Applications were to be submitted by September 15, 2016. A similar deadline is anticipated annually. To begin the application process, please contact the Foundation at to request an invitation code.
    • Sam's Club Community Giving - Applications for funding are accepted throughout the year.

    Award Details

    Awards vary based on program area:
    • Awards under the National Giving Program are $250,000 and more.
    • Awards under the State Giving Program range between $25,000 and $200,000.
    • Awards under the Community Grant Program range between $250 and $2,500.
    • Awards under the Northwest Arkansas Giving program are $10,000 and more.
    • Awards under the U.S. Manufacturing Innovation Fund are $100,000 and more that last 1 to 3 years.
    • Award amounts vary for Legal Department Strategic Partners Sponsorship grants.
    • Awards under the Sam's Club Community Giving program are from $250 to $2,500.
